5 Stills for 2011 Cannes Favorite & Silent Film – The Artist

The surprise hit of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival (official listing) has been this black & white silent film, The Artist. A full fledged silent feature is a tricky proposition for modern audiences but this one based on the Cannes screening seems to be an audience friendly crowd pleaser! The Artist is from filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius who also did the OSS 117 films which were great fun 60′s Eurospy & James Bond spoofs (also featuring same leading man in Jean Dujardin).

Synopsis:
Hollywood 1927.
George Valentin is a very successful silent movie star.
The arrival of talking pictures will mark the end of his career.
Peppy Miller, a young woman extra, becomes a major movie star.
“The silent movie is an emotional cinema, it’s sensorial; the fact that you don’t go through a text brings you back to a basic way of telling a story that only works on the feelings you have created. It’s a fascinating way to work.”
~ Michel Hazanavicius on making The Artist
